A large fire destroyed a shed in the area of Slate Mill Branch Road in Albemarle County just after midnight Monday morning. Firefighters on the scene have labeled it a total loss.

Investigators are trying to figure out what was inside a group of 55-gallon barrels that were in the shed at the time of the fire.

Relatives of the shed's owners say the family was burning trash when the fire got too hot and the flames spread to the nearby shed.

Firefighters used a dunk tank to battle the fire, but it was not enough. The fire also spread to some nearby woods surrounding the 1800 block of Slate Mill Branch Road.

No injuries have been reported.

Smokie, some of us still burn trash. No law against it except when the burn laws are in effect. Better than filling up the landfills. We recycle the glass and aluminum and burn what is considered "trash." It's not DUMB nor backwards. Guess your homeowners association won't allow that in your subdivision though. I'd rather own my large acreage and do what I want on it.

This is 2011. Why are people still burning trash? Seems kinda DUMB and backwards based on what we know about air borne pollutants.
