The first annual Michie Tavern Downtown Mile and Healthy Living Expo kicks off tonight.
Over 200 runners have already signed up for the mile-long race, and more are expected to show.
The race begins on Jefferson St. near Lee Park, and wraps around High St., ending on the Downtown Mall.
Experts will be available for running advice and healthy living tips during the expo in the pavilion.
"We decided to kind of model it after the New York 5th avenue mile, which is a big event in New York and thought it would be perfect to have it in downtown Charlottesville because there aren't a lot of races down here," says Jamie Coder, from Notus Sports, which is also sponsoring the event.
"It’s right next to the historical society and we like to incorporate a bunch of the older parts of Charlottesville in our race," says Coder.
First place finishers will win a cash prize of $1,000 dollars. Winners from different age groups will also win prizes.
The event starts at 5 pm and races begin at 6:30 and 7 pm. Registration is $40 dollars for families and $30 for individuals.
The proceeds will go to the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society.
