The First Baptist Church of West Main Street is trying to teach the youth in church that giving is an all-year mindset.
The church teamed up with the Main Street Arena on Saturday to help collect cans of food for the church's food pantry. About 30 children were able to skate for free on Saturday afternoon if they brought in canned goods for the pantry. It's all part of a new program they're starting for the children at church.
"Not only wait until Christmas to provide or give back to those in need but to do it all year long and to teach them organization skills because we're actually gonna have them put the food on the shelves to keep it in stock as well," Juana Dent, the event coordinator for the church.
Dent says this is the kick-off event for the year. The church plans to do one event each month that the kids can be involved in to give back to the community.
