Flash Flood Awareness Week

March 18, 2013

All of the wet weather the area saw this past weekend is a sign of spring, but it's also increasing the chance of flash floods.

The Charlottesville Fire Department wants everyone to know that March 18 through 22 is "Flash Flood Awareness Week."

Officials say some areas are more prone to flooding that others, like portions of Old Ivy Road.

They warn it is important to make a flash flood plan ahead of time, because floods strike quickly.

"If there is flash flood warnings they need to be prepared to quickly move to higher ground, and they need to have a plan for their family of what they are going to do in that case," said Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner. "You don't often have time to do much in the event of a flash flood."

Officials warn a car can float in only six inches of water, so during a storm drivers should avoid going through standing water.
