After not hosting a county fair for about three decades, Fluvanna County is bringing it back.

The Fluvanna County Fair opened Thursday night to a big crowd.

"Oh, I'm tickled to death," said George Goin, the president of the Fluvanna County Farm Bureau. "Especially this being a Thursday night and all the people we had."

Goin was instrumental in bringing the county fair back to Fluvanna. For years, young 4H members would have to travel to other counties to show their animals. Those that couldn't make it would not be eligible for the state fair.

"We decided, you know, we used to have a fair," Goin said. "We need to just start it back."

No one is certain when the Fluvanna County Fair stopped. Organizers have heard anecdotal evidence that there was a county fair in the early 1980s, but they don't have an exact date.

Several months ago they started collaborating with several county organizations to bring the fair back. Thursday night, the crowds showed their appreciation by packing a pep rally for Fluvanna County High School to open the fair.

Young farmers also showcased their animals, including 11-year-old Madison Angel, who showed her goat Floppy.

"People like (Floppy) because she loves attention," Madison said. Madison and Floppy won a red ribbon.

"A lot of kids these days don't have a great deal of responsibility," said Shawn Angel, Madison's father. "This is something outside of school that gets them active."

The fair has other things to keep kids active, including small rides and a bounce house. It also has all the treats and delicious food you would expect.

The fair continues Friday and Saturday at Pleasant Grove Park.
