The Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office will present a new safety initiative to the school board Wednesday. It makes sure all schools, both private and public, operate and respond in the same way during a crisis situation.

"My goal was to take a look at all of the plans for the public and the private schools and see how close can we come to parallel all of those plans and make them a little more consistent," said Fluvanna County Sheriff Ryant Washington.

A $160,000 grant from the state is helping to fund the project. It will allow teachers and staff to learn what to do in situations that may involve violence with a weapon, or how to deal with a disgruntled visitor.

Sheriff Washington wants the local school system to be prepared.

"There are some common language, what is a code red and what does it mean?" said Washington. "That way, a code red in one school means the same thing in another school, so that any administrator or any staff member tending one school versus the other, they automatically know what that signifies."

Washington say he's not looking to get rid of any plans each school has in place, but instead add a level of consistency throughout the area.
