Fluvanna Light Show Honors Disabled Veterans

May 25, 2014

For about a decade, a Fluvanna County man has been lighting up his front yard for the holidays.

Jeff Spinello's current display, which is running Memorial Day weekend through 4th of July weekend, is made up of about 9,000 red, white and blue lights and decorations.

The patriotic light show is set up on Lewis Court at Lake Monticello. It benefits the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

The whole show runs about 15 minutes. People can tune in to 88.1 FM from their car and hear the five patriotic songs the lights are synched with.

Spinello is known for constructing massive holiday displays in his front yard and on his home.

"I enjoy doing it," he said. "Some people think I'm nuts."

This show is considerably less bright than the 60,000 bulbs shining at his home at Christmas, but it's his newest show and it's growing.

Last year was the first year for the patriotic display. It raised about $400 for the Disabled American Veterans.

"They were really appreciative. They run a van service for the disabled vets to McGuire Hospital, so we're supporting them with that," said Spinello.

The light shows at Spinello's home are always free and open to anyone with access to Lake Monticello, but when spectators began chipping in money to try to help with his electric bill, he decided to give that cash to local charities instead.

The show is located at 4 Lewis Court. It runs from about 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. until July 6.
