Fluvanna County parents are signing an online petition, asking for the board of supervisors to help fund the school system. According to the petition, $750,000 would keep a both Columbia and Cunningham Elementary Schools open.

Recently the school board decided to close the schools in order to reach their budget goal.

"Everybody in my district wants the schools to open, not just because they love the school, yes they love the school, but because they think it's the best choice for the future in Fluvanna County," said parent Bridgette Madison.

Madison started the petition. She adds consolidating the two schools into the already existing Central Elementary student body, may not be the best choice.

"Larger schools doesn't always mean better benefits," she said.

Supervisor Mozell Booker supports the school boards decision to close the schools. Saying, bringing the schools together will make for better learning opportunities.

"We need to be giving our children as much as we can afford, so that they can go into the 21st century. Older schools just don't have those things. they don't have the infrastructure," said Booker.

The Fluvanna County School District and the board of supervisors have been wrestling with budget issues for over a year.
