After hours of input from parents, staff and students, the Fluvanna County School Board had to make a decision Wednesday night.
With a 3-2 vote, they will move forward with 4-day furlough's starting January 1, 2013. They also voted to cut their pay by 2% also starting January 1st.
For months, the Fluvanna School Board has been battling with budget issues. Wednesday it could have an answer on the solutions in store for the school system.
The school board is trying to figure out where to regain financial balance and find a way to make up more than $300,000. Many of the solutions proposed could change how the students go to school.
Some of the suggestions previously discussed were to cut the school week down to four days, eliminate some varsity sports, and close Columbia and Palmyra elementary schools. Now, the plans have been narrowed down a little bit taking some of the more controversial proposals off the table.
The school board is looking at possibly furloughing all of the staff which cuts costs on pay and utilities, cutting teaching positions permanently leading to less assistance for students, and to eliminate the alternative education program and four staff positions. All of these cuts add up to more than $300,000 in savings.
Camilla Washington, the Fluvanna County School Board Chair, said the board is working together to figure out the best solution.
"This is something that the whole division, including the school board is having to deal with. This has been a very tough budget year for us. It's seems like we have been discussing budgets since January of this year and trying to prepare now for next years budget. I think we're going to have to continue to be creative," Washington said.
The School board meeting was set to start Wednesday night at 5:30 followed by a public hearing at 7:00.
