A few weeks after the SPCA rejected a proposal from county officials, the Fluvanna Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a new contract with the SPCA during its meeting Wednesday night.
The supervisors met behind closed doors to discuss the deal, which will have the SPCA continue to provide shelter services for the county. Funding will be the same as under the interim agreement agreed upon earlier this month - $80,000 a year, which comes out to $6,600 a month.
The new contract, which ends June 30, 2012, will bring the FCSPCA in line with with other nonprofit agreements in the county.
In August, the Fluvanna County SPCA rejected the county's contract offer worth between $105,000 and $115,000, about $25,000 more than last year's funding.
The FCSPCA currently receives $80,000 a year from the county. However, in order to provide services that meet state regulations, the shelter claimed it would need an additional $50,000 to $70,000 each year.

The issue begins way before the SPCA. Spay and neuter your pets and be a responsible, kind pet owner. Then maybe the SPCA wouldn't need so much money in the future.
The FSPCA deserves a whole lot more than what the county seems to be willing to offer. Over the past year the changes in the shelter have continued to provide care over and above what the county has "paid" for. The board really should spend a day working at the shelter, see first hand what goes into maintaining it and then tell the county how much it is worth. I hate to see what happens when a BOS members dog ends up in the shelter and isn't treated like the pampered princess.
About time the supervisors got their act together on this. They'd better do right by the SPCA when the contract comes up again next year, and make good on their promise to increase future funding.
