Food trucks have been a talking point for the Charlottesville City Council for quite some time. Now, the wheels have been put into motion and a new ordinance has been put into action.

The growing food truck population made city council take a closer look at the rules in place for vending from vehicles. Up until recently, the ordinance only included ice cream trucks.

Daniel Heilberg, owner of The Lunchbox and The Lunchbox Express, said, "Overall, I think they've done a pretty good job of balancing and regulating it while letting us continue to operate and thrive."

The new ordinance defines how food trucks can operate and regulates where trucks can park.

Heilberg said, "If they've got the code and it's clear, everything can go smoothly and luckily the vendors, amongst ourselves, do a pretty good job of trying to keep high standards."

Champion Brewery owner, Hunter Smith, said he's a supporter of local food trucks. He sees the changes as a positive for the community.

Smith said, "It's my understanding that they are trying to benefit the food trucks. By trying to give them ways to set up on private property but just with parameters."

Every Wednesday through Saturday, at least one food truck is set up on the streets in front of Champion Brewery. Smith is glad to see food trucks becoming so abundant that the city is giving them attention.

Food trucks also allow Champion Brewery to focus just on beer and not have to include a food menu. This also gives food trucks a great vending option.

Smith said, "We like to have our focus on beer and it keeps up from having to staff accordingly. Those guys are able to be creative and have a rotating menu and provide variety for their guests the same way we try to do with beer."

City council unanimously adopted the new regulations Monday evening. They went into effect immediately.
