A former AAU basketball coach has been sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for defrauding a former University of Virginia basketball player.

Sixty-year-old Thomas Patric Boggs pleaded guilty to wire fraud in December, and was sentenced today in federal court in Lynchburg.

Prosecutors say Boggs became Travis Watson's mentor when Watson was in high school.

Following high school, Watson attended and played basketball at UVa. before playing professionally in Greece, Italy, Lithuania and other places in Europe.

Boggs offered to invest some money for Watson, and instructed the player to wire funds into two accounts.

Between 2009 and 2011, Watson wired $357,965 to those accounts. Boggs admitted that he used nearly all of the money sent by Watson to pay the personal expenses of Boggs and to pay family members.

In addition, throughout the process, Boggs assured Watson that he was making sound investments and that he was going to make Watson a “millionaire.”
