Former Crozet Volunteer Firefighter Laid to Rest

August 4, 2014

"He loved the fire service. He would eat and breathe the fire service. He was a friend to all. He would do anything he could for anybody in the community," says Chief Preston Gentry with the Crozet Volunteer Fire Department.

Robert Charles "Bubba" Baber, 44, died Friday after fighting a battle with cancer.

"Even though I've been in the service longer than he had, he still taught me things. I learned something new from him almost every day. We learned from each other," says Gentry.

The 4th generation volunteer with the Crozet Fire Department wanted to be laid to rest in style, so one-by-one fire trucks, rescue squads and EMS crews all traveled through the town, passing by the very firehouse he spent most of his time.

They ended their procession at Rockgate Cemetery.

"He was just loved by everybody, both by our organization Crozet Volunteer Fire Department and the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, and by the whole community," says Gentry.

Bubba leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his reach.

"The Baber name will be forever in this fire department because it was the Babers that helped run the fire department, help form this fire department along with everybody else, but Bubba just made a legend for his own self," says Gentry.

Back at the Crozet Volunteer Fire Station Bubba's gear lay in front of the flag post as a black draping and wreath hang in honor of his life.
