Former Gov. McDonnell, Wife Want Separate Trials

March 26, 2014

Lawyers for former Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, are asking a federal judge to order separate trials in their public corruption case.

Defense attorneys say Maureen McDonnell wants to testify on her husband's behalf, but would not do so if she is also on trial.

Attorneys also say in a joint trial, Maureen would invoke marital privilege that would prevent her husband from testifying about their private conversations.

The former first couple is also seeking dismissal of all but two of the fourteen charges against them.

The McDonnells are charged with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams, the former CEO of dietary supplements maker Star Scientific Inc., in exchange for helping promote his products.
