A lieutenant with the Albemarle County Police Department has lost his job after being accused of stealing public funds.
Lt. Ernest Allen resigned from the department on Monday. He faces a felony embezzlement charge.
Police Chief Col. Steve Sellers says Allen took $380 from a petty cash account assigned to the department. Sellers discovered the missing money during an audit.
Allen was suspended on Dec. 6, after Sellers questioned him about the missing money. Then on Monday, Sellers says Allen returned the missing $380 and resigned.
"Integrity is one of the core values of the Albemarle County Police Department," said Sellers. "I think we have demonstrated that illegal conduct will not be tolerated, and that no one is above the law."
Allen had worked for the police department for 27 years, most recently as a lieutenant over the Special Operations Division.
