Forum Discusses Fair Housing In The Charlottesville Area

April 23, 2013

April is Fair Housing Month and also marks the 45th anniversary of the federal Fair Housing Act, which prohibits discrimination in housing.

On Tuesday, the Piedmont Housing Alliance along with Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission came together to host a forum.

Members of the community came out to listen to a panel discussion that focused on two main questions: Where are the gaps in fair housing in Charlottesville? And what should communities do to promote equal housing opportunity?

"So we are talking about individual instances of discrimination," says Karen Reifenberger, Deputy Director of the Piedmont Housing Alliance. "But we are also talking about being more thoughtful as a community and actually planning and allocating resources to create equal housing opportunity and communities of opportunity."

Members of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) spoke at the forum on ways they plan to help close the housing gap.

The forum was designed to get feedback from the community as well as rental and real estate groups that may be struggling with fair housing in their area.
