APPOMATTOX, Va. (AP) - Appomattox is being recognized for its efforts to care for trees.
The National Arbor Day Foundation has designated Appomattox as a Tree City USA. The national program recognizes and promotes communities that take special steps to care for trees.
Barbara White with the Virginia Department of Forestry tells The News & Advance (http://bit.ly/112GeUH ) that the designation makes the town eligible for certain grants and gives it more favor for grants open to everyone.
White says there are 56 Tree City USAs in Virginia.
