(AP) - Veteran Virginia journalist and founding director of the Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership William H. Wood has died.
Wood's death on Friday was confirmed Tuesday by his wife, Carol Wood, who said he died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He died two weeks after the Woods had moved to Birmingham, Ala., to be near their son and his family.
Wood spent 26 years in the newspaper business before coming to the University of Virginia and the Sorensen Institute. He spent his last 10 years in journalism at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk as editorial page editor.
Wood launched the institute at U.Va. in 1993 as an educational and training organization for Virginia's emerging political leaders. More than 1,000 Virginians have graduated from Sorensen's programs, which are conducted around the state.
