A local organization is helping young people get hyped for the holidays.

HYPE, which stands for Helping Young People Evolve, hosted its second-annual coat giveaway. Hundreds of warm coats were up for grabs on Saturday.

The community has joined together in collecting more than 500 coats to hand out to those in need. Families were able to pick up the winter coats in front of First Baptist Church, and the line stretched around the corner.

Several people also stopped by to show their support through donations.

"Last year was our first year doing it, and we saw there was a huge need in the city," HYPE director Wes Bellamy said. "There were several people who we were seeing in the community who didn't have coats, and last winter was a very cold winter. So, we wanted to say, 'Hey, what could we do to try and pull our resources together to help keep people warm?'"

Some of the leftover winter coats will be used for HYPE's second giveaway of the season in South Carolina. Everything else will be dropped off at the Coat Closet in Charlottesville.
