Traffic on 29 North was halted and diverted following a gas leak earlier today.
A four inch natural gas line ruptured just north of Rio Road around 11:00 AM Wednesday morning. The
Fire investigators shut down all lanes of Route 29, Seminole Trail, for several hours. Traffic had to be diverted so that crews could safely fix the gas line.
"This is a gas leak so the fire department is the main command center , they are the one doing the investigation and doing the work at the scene," said Albemarle Police Spokesperson Carter Johnson. "They do have a command post set up. Right now we are here to assist them and basically our role is assisting them with traffic."
Many commuters were confused as to why the road was closed.
"We thought maybe there was some important official arriving," said commuter, Lynn Wilson.
Some restaurant owner say the road closure was bad for business.
"In order to get here you have to go through Albemarle Square, there's a small road here, and it's all stuck," said Thai 99 owner, Won Pethum.
Most lanes were reopened shortly before 2:00 PM.
