Prices at the gas pumps are rising at record levels for this time of year, both nationally and in central Virginia.
Nationally, the average price per gallon peaked at $3.58 this week for unleaded gasoline, which is up 11 cents from last week.
In Charlottesville, though, the average price per gallon is $3.37 -- lower than the national average, but still up four cents from last week.
Auto group AAA reports the blame goes to rising crude oil prices and refineries shutting down, both permanently and for routine maintenance.
New data also show the average household spent about $3,000 on gasoline alone in 2012, which is about 4 percent of income before taxes.
