Gas Tax Decrease Could Lead to Lower Prices at the Pump

As the historic transportation bill takes effect in Virginia on Monday, the Commonwealth's gas tax has dropped, potentially leading to lower prices at the pump.

The tax rate for gasoline is now 11.1 cents per gallon, down from 17.5 cents per gallon. That could translate to cheaper gas, but probably not for another few weeks until the current supply is used.

Experts say drivers could see gas prices drop 5 or 6 cents per gallon.

The decreased gas tax is offset by an increase in the state sales tax. The changes are to raise money for highway projects in Northern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.
