Ghana's official Independence Day is March 6th, but that was on a weekday, so the party was pushed back to the weekend.

Saturday night's bash featured plenty of music, dancing and authentic Ghanaian food.

Several of Charlottesville's local leaders participated in the celebration including, Mayor Satyendra Huja and Vice Mayor Dede Smith.

A night full of pride as organizers recognize Ghana's journey to independence.

"We took control of our own destiny so that we could map our own future," said Nana Akyeampong-Ghartey, Chairman of the Ghana Association of Charlottesville.

The Ghana Association of Charlottesville is a non-profit organization that links together under privileged communities in Ghana to resources and support in Charlottesville.
