A national movement against big banking has made its way to Charlottesville. On Friday, members of Virginia Organizing gathered at the Bank of America branch on the Downtown Mall to put the bank on notice.

The grassroots group delivered a letter to the bank expressing disappointment in some of its policies and procedures, including their belief that Bank of America is not paying its fair share of taxes.

"So many of them got bailed out using our money and they haven't used that bailout to help the people that paid their taxes," said Brenda Lambert.

The letter also notified the bank that leaders of Virginia Organizing plan to attend the next Bank of America shareholders meeting, which is expected to be in May in Charlotte, NC.

The letter and protest are part of an ongoing Move Our Money/Confront Corporate Power campaign encouraging people to move their money from big banks to small community banks and credit unions.

"We're going to keep pushing about this and see if we can't do something about the whole concept of corporations being treated as people and having the same kind of say that we as individuals do," Lambert said.

The manager of the Downtown Mall bank branch said he's not allowed to accept the letter on behalf of the CEO, so Virginia Organizing says it will mail the letter instead.

These Occupiers have already been effective: "The Stanardsville branch of the Bank of America has announced it will close its doors on March 9, forcing its customers to drive to Ruckersville to its nearest location and leaving the town without a major source of revenue." (Greene County Record Published: December 15, 2011) Is this what you really want to happen to small town America?????
