Greene County residents now have a place to drop off unwanted medicines year-round.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office has placed a permanent prescription drug drop box outside the office. Anyone can come by at any time and put unwanted, unused prescriptions or over-the-counter medications inside.
Similar programs only operate twice a year, but Sheriff Steve Smith says he saw a demand for a permanent operation.
"We've had a lot of requests from citizens, what do they do with their old medications, and we just thought it was a good idea to have a program like this to get rid of their old medicine, to get it out of their houses, to keep young people from perhaps getting the medicine, and to just have a safe place to dispose of it."
Sheriff Smith asks that no sharp needles or other objects be placed inside the box.
All medicines will be destroyed on site at the sheriff's office, and reported to the pharmaceutical board.
The Greene County Sheriff's Office is located at 10005 Spotswood Trail, Stanardsville, Va. 22973.
