There's only one community recycling center in Albemarle County, and it might be gone in June pending action by Charlottesville and county officials.
Volunteers from Better World Betty are petitioning to keep the McIntire Recycling Center because Charlottesville and Albemarle officials are talking about closing it down. The group collected signatures at McIntire Park on Saturday.
Their goal is to get 350 signatures on the petition by Tuesday, which is when the Rivanna Water and Sewer Authority will make a decision.
"I feel like this is a responsible thing to do with our waste as a community. People love the McIntire Recycle Center. The comments that we've been getting online are really nice, people are saying, 'Well, where am I going to take my recyclables, we go there every Saturday.' It feels like community," said Teri Kent, executive director of Better World Betty.
She says if the center ends up closing, it will do the community and environment more harm than good.
