NY Man Convicted of Supplying Charlottesville Store With Bath Salts

January 11, 2013

A New York man was convicted on Thursday of federal drug dealing charges connected with a video store in Central Virginia.

52 year-old Stephen Dominick McFadden was found guilty of one charge of conspiracy to distribute illegal drugs and eight counts of distributing illegal drugs.

According to evidence in the four-day Charlottesville trial, McFadden was the primary bath salts supplier for the former owner of C-ville Video.

"It was a problem out there," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Huber. "These people were lined up in front of C-ville Video before the place even opened up, to buy their bath salts."

The former owner of the store, Lois McDaniel, and one of her employees, Dustin Wayne Orange, have already pleaded guilty to selling bath salts.

Huber says McFadden's conviction is important, because it proves that bath salts are illegal, and bath salt cases can be prosecuted in the same way as cases involving cocaine, heroin, or meth distribution.

"People claim that they're being distributed for glass cleaner or lady bug attractant," said Huber. "But we know that the only purposes that these substances are being distributed is for people to ingest. These substances are dangerous, and it's illegal."
