Gun-rights Advocates Rally at Va. Capitol

January 19, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Hundreds of people are gathering in state capitals nationwide to rally against stricter gun control measures.

About 150 gun-rights advocates rallied outside the Virginia State Capitol on Saturday and walked around the perimeter of Capitol Square in support of the rights of gun-owners.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that those in attendance included a gun shop manager from Bassett and policeman from Rocky Mount, three friends from Alleghany County, and gun rights supporters from Arlington, Fishersville and Glen Allen.

Activists have promoted the "Guns Across America" rallies primarily via social media. They're being held days after President Barack Obama unveiled a sweeping package of gun-control proposals.

Several gun control measures were introduced in the General Assembly following the Connecticut school shooting, but passage appears unlikely in this session.
