Eight homes in 11 days. That is the goal of the new Habitat for Humanity (HFH) project.
Hundreds of volunteers are expected to join members of the organization to begin building the frames for eight houses in the new Belmont Cottages middle-income community.
Wednesday morning, HFH started with a ceremony before they begin building.
"Today we're gonna start standing up walls on a few of the homes and complete decking on a few of the others, so in 11 days this whole area is going to be transformed," says executive director Dan Rosensweig.
They hope to have 25 volunteers a day and are looking for more to help.
The event is a part of their "Project 20" goal, where they will build 20 houses in a year.
The eight homes, 11 days event will make way for eight families to have a place to call home by the holidays.
One woman was working with HFH to help build her own home, which should be ready by September.
"I'm very, very excited, I think my daughter is more excited than I am," says Sheron Sinclair. "We could not have done it without habitat and I think everyone dreams of owning their own home."
About 30 volunteers came out to the site today to build houses. A few were from the organization Bike & Build. They bike across the country helping out housing programs. Overall the volunteers just want to create affordable housing for families in need.
"When you have adequate affordable shelter, when you know you are going to come home every night to a safe, decent, affordable home, everything in your life is better," says Rosensweig.
