The Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department and the University of Virginia Ryan White Program will be offering free HIV testing Tuesday. The free testing is in part of National Black HIV Awareness Day.

Studies show 60 percent of people living with the virus in the state of Virgina are African American. Organizers of the event say it's important to get tested because early treatment can make a difference.

"Now a days with HIV, when people are infected there's excellent treatment and care that's available. So when people get into care they have an excellent life prognosis meaning their length of life is much longer than it used to be," said Nicholas Mattsson of the Thomas Jefferson Health District.

The free HIV testing will be at the health department off of Rose Hill Drive in Charlottesvillle. The testing begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.

The results from the test will be available 30 minutes after you take the test.
