Keeping your blood pressure in check could keep you form developing serious problems with your kidneys.

When a patient has high blood pressure it puts more stress on the kidneys which, overtime damages the blood vessels that go into the kidneys as well as the rest of the system.

"The grand canyon is huge but it didn't start like that chances are it started over like a stream running and you can imagine that stream over time, but if we put more pressure in that stream it starts doing more damage," said Dr. Robert Freeman, a MJH Nephrologist.

People at risk for kidney disease resulting from high blood pressure, include those that already have kidney damage, elderly people, those with a history of kidney disease in the family and people who have a lot of salt in their diet.

When it comes to kidney disease, once the damage has been done it cannot be reversed, however, you can stop more damage from being done. Dr. Freeman suggests regular doctor visits, eating a healthy diet, exercising and having your blood pressure checked often, even if you already have hypertension.
