This late winter snow storm will being heavy, wet snow because temperatures are expected to hover around freezing. This type of snow is perfect for snow balls and snowmen, but not perfect when it comes to power lines and trees.
Barbara White, Urban Forester at the Virginia Department of Forestry, said, "Trees that have the most problem are going to be the evergreens because they hold more weight on them."
With added weight, our electricity could be at the mercy of falling tree limbs.
Greg Edwards, Media and Community Relations Manager for Dominion Virginia Power, said, "It's expected to be wet snow which promises to bring down trees and power lines. The snow will primarily bring tree limbs down. The tree limbs will take down the power lines."
White said that for the reachable limbs near the ground, you can dust off the snow to protect your trees but only is it's fresh snow.
"If it freezes and it freezes down to the ground," said White. "It's important to leave that and let it naturally melt and dissipate so that you're not actually doing damage."
Tree limbs are likely to fall under the weight of the snow and just in case they do fall, Dominion Virginia Power said you should be ready.
Edwards said, "Make sure they've got flashlights, battery powered radio, extra batteries, make sure your car is gassed up and just get ready because this could be a serious storm for a lot of folks."
Dominion has over 4000 crew members on standby to restore power. If you do lose power the number to call is 1-866-DOM-HELP.
