Don't be alarmed if you see a heightened military presence in Charlottesville over the next few days. It's all part of a training exercise by the United States Marine Corp.
The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit is based in Camp Lejeune, N.C. but they are in Charlottesville for training before they deploy early next year.
2,500 marines will take part in an urban training exercise, which is part of a rigorous six-month training before they deploy to parts of Africa and Europe. The goal of the exercise is to allow the
Marines to train in completely new areas that are unique from the facilities on base.
The urban training began last week, and will run until September 13. Residents will notice more military aircraft, ground vehicles, Marines and role players in and around Charlottesville periodically throughout the exercise.
Marines will go house-to-house to notify residents before each training exercise.
