High School Sisters Create Award to Honor Fallen Student

June 12, 2013

As the school year wraps up in Albemarle County, students at Woodbrook Elementary are honoring a fallen friend by creating a new award.

Albemarle High School sisters Savannah and Summer Maxwell presented the first annual Carson Raymond Citizenship Award to two Woodbrook fifth graders on Wednesday.

Carson Raymond attended Woodbrook and died in 2009 due to complications from H1N1, commonly known as the "swine flu".

The Maxwell sisters wanted to create an award for students that displayed the qualities of friendship, citizenship and inclusiveness.

"We believe this is an award that Carson would have received some time in his school career. We thought why not recognize another kid for having the same qualities as he had," said Savannah Maxwell.

"He was just an amazing person. He was such an inspiration and everyone just loved being around him. He had a great spirit and he was just awesome to have at this school," said Summer Maxwell.

This year's recipients are Katie Eastlack and Daniel Livingston.

"I feel special because people think of me as a role model and that I can help them out.," said Katie Eastlack.

"I think it's great," said Daniel Livingston.

The winners received a plaque and a check for $50.

The Maxwell sisters are hoping to expand this award to other schools in the future.
