Historians Criticize Albemarle Co. for Throwing Away Old Documents

July 18, 2013

Albemarle County leaders are being criticized for throwing away old records in order to make space.

Historians say the records contained valuable information about the county during the Great Depression.

The records are related to a land survey, done between 1937 and 1942. Some pictures related to the documents have been preserved, but notations about the families that owned the land were thrown away.

Historians say they used information from these documents to identify the cemetery that was in the way of the Western Bypass.

"It's kind of sad, especially when the Historical Society would have been a willing recipient of the records," says Steven Meeks, president of the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. "Those of us in the historical community knew the value of them, but unfortunately somebody at the county didn't even recognize it."

County leaders say they were following state guidelines when they threw away the documents, but they will work with historians in the future to avoid getting rid of other valuable items.
