Historical Society Accepting Nominations for Preservation Award

If you've completed a historical renovation in the past year, you could be recognized for your work.

The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is accepting nominations for its 2014 Preservation Award.

People, organizations, or agencies that have finished a restoration or renovation in Charlottesville or Albemarle County since September 2013 may enter.

"People do a lot of different things in recording history: writings books, photographing, documenting, but the hands-on renovation, restoration of a property, is probably the sort of the ultimate preservation effort," said Steven Meeks, the president of the historical society.

Keith Woodard won last year's Preservation Award for renovating several building on the Downtown Mall at the 1st Street intersection, including the Old Metropolitan Hall.

"He renovated the building from top to bottom. I mean, did a wonderful job," said Meeks. "We thought since that was right in the heart of the city and he had put so much effort into it, he deserved recognition."

"Most of these people are doing it as a labor of love. Maybe for monetary gain, but primarily because they really want to do it, they really want to save the property, save the buildings. And I think people deserve recognition for that."
