A holiday pet food drive wrapped up this weekend after three months of collecting food for rescued pets in central Virginia.
Trista Fann volunteers for Caring for Creatures and Ring Dog Rescue. She said food for the dogs is one of the biggest expenses, so she spread the word about a pet food drive at four different pet shops, including Natural Pet Essentials in Albemarle County.
Customers at that store contributed more than 1,200 pounds of food.
"I figured if I could alleviate one of those expenses, I would make a difference this holiday season," Fann said. "This is the first time we've done this and we just went off of the generosity of the public."
One dog could go through as much as 50 pounds of food each month. All four locations brought in 1,600 pounds of food, and organizers say they're looking forward to doing it again next year.
