Holiday Shoppers Brave the Elements and the Lines

December 24, 2012

By the looks of the lines at a number of local stores, you might not think that Christmas was only a day away.

Shoppers flooded malls, shops and stores Monday for some last-minute holiday gifts.

Procrastinators were not alone. According to Consumer Reports, more than 60 percent of people had not finished their shopping by last Thursday, making the past few days very busy for retailers.

"I do have a plan, looking for my brother and my father last-minute," shopper Emily Burruss said.

"Not to mention, we got total different age groups to buy for," shopper Kaylin Ring said. "We got a child, a toddler, then we got a pre-teen, then we got a teenager."

Everyone has his or her own excuse for holding off on shopping.

"I'm working right now, so I just didn't have time getting out shopping and stuff, but I'm glad I made it tonight," shopper Brendai Shelton said.

"We go to three different stores to go find one thing," shopper David Musselman said.

As many shoppers scour the aisle trying to find those last-minute gifts, many people say it's not about what's inside the cart but rather what happens after checkout.

"It's about giving, not receiving," Ring said.

And some shoppers say they get a rush from putting things off to the last minute.

"It's fun. It's more fun," Burruss said. "You get the boost, the spirit. I love it. I love the adrenaline."
