Major budget cuts are to come if there isn't a decision in Washington this week. One of the programs that could be affected by the sequester is the Piedmont Housing Alliance in Charlottesville.
They create housing opportunities for low to moderate income familes and individuals. If there is no decision by the end of the week, they could see major cuts in their programs.
That loss in funding could directly affect residents in the greater Charlottesville area and that thought raised some concerns for Karen Reifenberger, the Deputy Director of the Piedmont Housing Alliance.
"One of the specific programs that we are concerned about is our housing voucher program, because it serves a very vunerable population: people with disabilities, on fixed incomes who can't afford rent in the community," says Reifenberger. "One of the options for voucher administrators is to freeze rents."
If rents were to increase after that freeze, then the rental assiatance being provided by the alliance would not be able to cover that difference.
