IIHS Releases List of Safest Cars

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its list of vehicles earning top safety ratings for 2014 on Thursday morning. This year cars had to meet even higher standards to earn a top rating.

For the first time, vehicles not only needed top crash test scores, but had to have an effective crash prevention system such as collision warning or automatic braking. Usually about 130 vehicles are on the list, but because of the tougher standards only 39 made the cut.

"We think as important as it is for a vehicle to protect you in a crash, it's important to know if it can prevent that crash in the first place. That's even better," said IIHS President Adrian Lund.

Honda, which also owns Acura, had the most winners on the list. Eight of its vehicles earned top safety picks, taking the top spots for small cars, minivans, and large luxury cars.

By including crash prevention technology in the new standards the IIHS hopes that manufacturers will continue to use crash prevention, developing them further and even making them standard in cars.
