Increase In Credit Card Fraud Reports In Nelson County

December 2, 2013

It's the last thing you want to worry about while you are doing your holiday shopping: credit card fraud. But credit cards and debit cards can leave our bank accounts vulnerable to predators, as some Nelson residents recently discovered. A string of credit card frauds have been happening lately.

Nelson County Investigator Billy Mays says they have gotten quite a few reports, but this kind of issue is so widespread and the predators could be anywhere:

"What we're seeing is a lot of the businesses that have the credit card machines that are used to swipe your credit card and debit card those machines themselves are what is actually being hacked into, and when you swipe your card, that information is being forwarded to whoever the would be hacker might be."

Tommy Stafford of Blue Ridge Life Magazine says when it happened to him, the card was used in New Jersey.

He then went onto Facebook to find out if other people had been hit.

"All of the sudden it was like somebody opened the floodgates, and we saw all these people that had their card information compromised."

The responders reported their cards were used as far as Texas, Florida, England, and even India.

The victims have reported both credit card and debit card fraud.

Luckily, many victims had banks or credit card companies that caught it quickly.

Mays says your best defense is to watch your credit and debit card transactions closely, especially your debit cards, to make sure that someone has not gotten ahold of your number.
