Traffic was backed up along McIntire Road in Charlottesville on Wednesday, as crews started construction on the 250 Bypass interchange.
McIntire Road was reduced to one lane between Harris Street and Route 250. The closure is to make a path for construction workers to access lanes as they begin work on the Route 250 Bypass interchange.
The interchange will connect the Meadowcreek Parkway to Route 250, creating an alternate route into the city limits from the county.
The project is expected to take two years to complete.
Until then, drivers should expect delays and different traffic patterns as construction continues.
