Investigation into UVa Professor Continues with Search of School Office

March 21, 2013

The investigation into longtime UVa professor, Paul Allaire, continues with a police search of his office on university grounds.

Search warrants show UVa police want access to documents and computer files in Allaire's office in the mechanical engineering department. Allaire is accused of stealing between $700,000 and one million dollars from the Rotating Machinery and Controls (ROMAC) Industrial Program he oversaw as director for more than a decade.

Investigators have already conducted a 10-hour search of Allaire's home on Emmerson Drive. In search warrants filed in Albemarle County court in February, investigators wrote "it's likely the search of Allaire's office will yield further evidence of the criminal scheme operated by Mr. Allaire."

A UVa spokesperson said Allaire is currently employed by the university, although he hasn't taught any classes this school year. Allaire is accused of misusing public funds. NO charges have been filed, but UVa police call it "an ongoing investigation". In January, Allaire filed a lawsuit against UVa, asking for $100,000 in damages.

Investigators filed paperwork to search Allaire's office the same day attorneys for the university filed paperwork to have the lawsuit dropped.
