The local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library have teamed up for a paid internship and scholarship program.

The two organizations found they had a common goal of creating local job opportunities and also to increase the diversity in the field of librarianship.

The program offers library work experience for a year with a stipend and the opportunity to apply for an annual scholarship.

"It's an opportunity for someone to get up to $3,000 a year to help pay for college and also in our interest, we'd like to encourage people to consider librarianship as a career," said Library Director John Halliday.

The program is supported by 'Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library' endowment fund. Applications for the new program are due in March.
