A local organization that serves children celebrated a milestone Monday night.
The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville held a birthday gala for its 90th Anniversary.
Members, including past leaders, cut a cake and remembered events at the Elks Lodge in Albemarle County.
Jim Hart, a previous Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville President, said the club's proudest achievement in its 90 years is its sponsorship of service leadership programs in area high schools. The Charlottesville Kiwanis Club sponsors Key Clubs in five local high schools, a program at UVa, and a new program at Venable Elementary School teaching service and leadership in the community.
"As a result of that, we ensure that this community will have a continuing flow of great leaders coming through the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville and serving the children of the world for years to come," said Hart.
Two former Virginia governors, John Battle and George Allen, were members of the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville.
