A local service group continued a holiday tradition of treating people with disabilities to an exciting evening.

The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville held its annual Holiday Party for Persons with Disabilities.

Guests ate a barbecue dinner, enjoyed tricks by Mr. Magic, and received candy canes from Santa.

Andrea Givens attended the party with Curly, for whom she is a caretaker. Givens said the two have attended the party for six or seven years.

"They look forward to this event every year and it's so much fun for them," said Givens.

"They look forward to it all year long," said Jim Hart, a member and previous president of the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville. "And we look forward to it, as well, all year long, so we're just really, really happy to be able to put this on."

It was the club's 30th annual year to hold the party.

"Some of the folks that are here have been with us ever since the beginning. And, of course, they were children at the time when they came to the party and they're still with us," said Hart.

More than 100 guests of WorkSource Enterprises attended. WorkSource Enterprises is a non-profit group that provides job services to help people with disabilities become independent and participate in the community.

"It's a great community partnership, is what it is. And that's what Kiwanis is all about. It's collaborating using the resources that are already in the community helping...people and families in need, and not reinventing the wheel but having a real boost to those agencies that are doing a great job," said Hart. "They're day in and day out helping the folks in need, but Kiwanis comes along and does something special for them."

The Charlottesville Kiwanis Club helps fund the party, along with other programs throughout the year, through its Christmas tree and wreath sale at the Seminole Square Shopping Center in front of the Marshal's, Big Lots, and Office Depots stores.

If you'd like to buy a tree or wreath from the club, you can go Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Mondays through Fridays from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Hart says the sale runs through December 20.
