Supporters of marriage equality are planning a special Valentine's Day rally.
Local members of the LGBT community are organizing a gathering at the Charlottesville clerk of court's office on Thursday.
A number of same-sex couples plan to apply for marriage licenses. While those applications will be denied since same-sex marriage is illegal in Virginia, organizers hope the action will draw attention to the issue.
"It's a gathering to celebrate the fact that there are many supporters and there are people who understand what we're facing and also to bring awareness to the issue of marriage equality," said Amy Marshall, the president of the Charlottesville Pride Community Network.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. on Thursday at the clerk of court's office on High Street.
