Lady Arm Wrestlers Battle for Charity

November 3, 2012

Local women organized a wrestling match of a different kind Saturday night, showing their strength for charity.

CLAW, the Charlottesville Lady Arm Wrestlers, hosted a fundraiser at the Blue Moon Diner on West Main Street. Local women took to the stage in an official arm wrestling competition.

The crowd can bet on the outcome of the separate matches -- or bribe judges and the referees -- using fictional CLAW bucks. Competitors created different characters, including Sarah Palin, Malice in Wonderland and Tragedy Ann.

"Getting to dress up in costume and create this character as really get to develop who that character is is pretty fun," Ann said. "I grew up here, so it's fun to be a character who no one would know who I am."

The events are used as fundraisers for a number of charities geared toward helping women.

"I'm pretty competitive, I love empowering women and doing women events, so it was just kind of a natural thing to be a part of it," Ann said.

The Charlottesville group has spawned lady arm wrestling organizations in other cities like Chicago, New Orleans and New York City.

Proceeds from Saturday's event benefit the Hamner Theater, which is currently looking for a new home.
