The Landmark Hotel was declared a "blighted" property by the city planning commission. So what exactly does that mean, and what comes next?

The hotel was the creation of entrepreneur Halsey Minor. They broke ground on the site in March of 2008. The site promised a $30 million dollar luxury property with nine stories and a rooftop bar. The opening was scheduled for July 2009.

Now the building stands much the same as it did back in 2009.
Graffiti litters the shell of a building, and trash is scattered inside of the structure.

City officials have maintained that it's a security risk.

Now, Jim Tolbert says a recommendation from the city planning commission is forcing the issue of what they call an unsafe structure.

"It’s the responsibility of the owner to take care of the property and maintain it. This owner has chosen not to do so. If council approves the sanction he will be given the opportunity to do whatever is established by council as what they want to see as the recommendations. "

Commissioners recommended owner John Dewberry build a bigger fence around the first floor of the structure and a chain-link fence around the second floor, weatherize the building, and deliver a structural report.

He will either have to secure the building, or have the city do the work and send him a bill. Dewberry has maintained that the building is secure and that he has done his part.
