Governor Bob McDonnell is preparing to go over the fiscal cliff, warning state agencies about deep budget cuts that will likely fall on city councils and board of supervisors to deal with.

The largest budget cut proposal, for $53 million, is to public safety.

"They're putting their lives on the line everyday for our safety. But we're going to take away the money they need for new equipment and need to just keep the community safe," said Cherilyn Ercol, a central Virginia resident.

Charlottesville has been rated in the top ten most charming towns, number one city to live in the U.S., and most walkable city in Virginia. These are all accolades people do not want to go away.

"I was just ice skating and left my uggs in the ice skating rink and a lot of other people did too. You didn't have to worry about anyone taking anything because Charlottesville is so safe and no one wants that to change," said Albemarle County resident, Carrie O'Brien.

And with crime on a downward trend for the past several years, some people say they hope our local agencies aren't put in a bad position.

"If there were cut backs that would in turn cause an uptake in burglaries or robberies or anything like that that would definitely be a concern," said Albemarle County resident, Daniel Corbe.

"What's a good thing to cut really? Who can be happy that it's safety but what would be good?" O'Brien said. "But I am glad education wasn't the largest proposed cut," the PVCC employee said.
